Pediatric & Strabismus
A child may not always say they are having trouble seeing. Many eye problems begin early and stay unnoticed because children adjust quietly. At Sadhuram Eye Hospital, we believe good vision is important not only for seeing clearly, but also for learning, confidence, school performance, and overall development.
Early eye checkups help identify problems before they affect vision permanently. With the right treatment at the right time, many childhood eye conditions can be corrected or well managed, helping every child grow with healthy vision and confidence.
Common Childhood Eye Problems We Treat
1. Childhood Refractive Errors
Some children may have difficulty seeing the blackboard, reading clearly, or focusing on distant objects. They may squint often, rub their eyes, complain of headaches, or sit too close to screens. Common refractive errors include myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. If left untreated, these can affect learning and may lead to lazy eye. A simple vision check and the right glasses can make a big difference.
2. Squint / Strabismus
This is commonly called crossed eyes, where one eye may turn inward, outward, upward, or downward. Some children are born with it, while others may develop it later.
Squint is not just a cosmetic issue. It can affect proper vision development and depth perception. Early treatment with glasses, exercises, or surgery can help improve eye alignment and vision quality.
3. Allergic Eye Disease
Children with eye allergy often have itching, redness, watering, and frequent eye rubbing. It may look like an infection, but many times it is caused by dust, pollen, weather changes, or sensitivity. If ignored, constant rubbing can worsen the condition and affect the cornea. Proper treatment and simple lifestyle changes can help control symptoms effectively.
4. Childhood Cataract
Some children are born with cataract, or it may develop later in childhood. Parents may notice a white reflex in the eye, poor eye contact, shaking of the eyes, or reduced vision.
Since cataract blocks light from entering the eye, early diagnosis is very important. Timely surgery helps improve visual development and prevents long term vision loss.
5. Congenital Lacrimal Duct Obstruction
Some babies have continuous watering and discharge from the eyes even when there is no redness. This happens because the tear drainage pathway is blocked. Many cases improve with simple treatment and massage. Some children may need a minor procedure if the blockage continues beyond a certain age.
6. Retinopathy of Prematurity Screening
Babies born premature, with low birth weight, or those who needed NICU care may require special retinal screening. ROP can affect the developing retina and may lead to blindness if missed. Early screening within the recommended time is very important to protect the child’s vision.
Warning Signs Parents Should Not Ignore
- Frequent eye rubbing
- Sitting too close to TV or mobile
- Squinting while looking far
- Watering eyes often
- Crossed eyes
- Headache complaints
- White reflex in the eye
- Poor eye contact in infants
- One eye closing in bright sunlight
- Drooping eyelids
If any of these signs are noticed, an eye checkup should not be delayed.
Why Early Treatment Matters
Many childhood eye problems can be treated successfully when identified early. Delay can lead to lazy eye, poor school performance, reduced confidence, and in some cases, permanent vision loss. The earlier the treatment starts, the better the outcome for the child’s future vision and development.
Evaluation and Diagnosis
We use child friendly methods to evaluate vision and eye health, including:
- Vision testing
- Refraction check
- Squint assessment
- Dilated eye examination
- Cataract evaluation
- Tear duct assessment
- ROP screening for newborns
- Pediatric retinal examination
Every child is assessed carefully based on age and symptoms.
Treatment Options
Treatment depends on the condition and may include:
- Glasses
- Eye drops
- Lazy eye patching
- Vision therapy
- Squint correction
- Cataract surgery
- Tear duct procedures
- ROP laser treatment
- Regular follow up care
The goal is always early correction and long term healthy vision.
Important Note for Parents
Children can also present with conditions like ptosis, childhood glaucoma, corneal opacity, coloboma, night blindness, developmental visual delay, and genetic eye disorders involving the eye.Even small changes in a child’s eye appearance or behavior should be checked early.
Children may not complain, but their eyes often show the signs. Early attention can prevent bigger problems later. A simple eye check today can protect a lifetime of clear vision tomorrow.
