What is Refractive Surgery?

Refractive surgery is done to improve how the eye focuses and to reduce the need for glasses or contact lenses. It helps correct common problems like short sight, far sight, and cylindrical power.
Many people think only power matters, but the condition of the cornea, eye pressure, tear film, and overall eye health are also important before surgery. At Sadhuram Eye Hospital, patients are checked carefully first, because every eye is different and not everyone needs the same procedure.

Types of Refractive Surgery

  • LASIK
  • Femto LASIK
  • SMILE
  • ICL (Implantable Contact Lens)
Both need proper check and regular follow up.

LASIK

What is LASIK?

LASIK is a commonly done vision correction procedure to reduce dependence on glasses. A thin flap is made on the cornea, and a laser is used to reshape the inner layer so light focuses properly on the retina. The flap is placed back after treatment and healing usually happens quickly.

Suitable For

  • Myopia less than 10D
  • Hypermetropia less than 4D
  • Astigmatism less than 4D
  • Stable power for at least 1 year
  • Age above 18 years
  • Good corneal thickness

Not Suitable For

  • Keratoconus
  • Thin cornea
  • Severe dry eyes
  • Eye infection
  • Glaucoma
  • Pregnancy
  • Autoimmune disease
  • Certain retinal problems

Femtosecond LASIK

What is Femto LASIK?

Femto LASIK is a more advanced form of LASIK. Instead of using a blade, a femtosecond laser creates the corneal flap. This gives better precision and helps the surgeon plan the flap more accurately for each patient.

Advantages

  • Better precision
  • Better safety
  • Customized flap creation
  • Faster healing
  • More comfort during surgery
At Sadhuram Eye Hospital, proper testing helps decide whether standard LASIK or Femto LASIK is better for the patient.

SMILE

What is SMILE?

SMILE means Small Incision Lenticule Extraction. In this procedure, a small piece of corneal tissue is created using a femtosecond laser and removed through a very small opening. There is no large flap, so many patients feel it is more comfortable and dry eye problems may be less.

Indications

  • Power from -0.5D to -12D
  • Astigmatism up to -5D
  • Age above 18 years
  • Stable eye power
  • Healthy corneal thickness

Contraindications

  • Keratoconus
  • Severe dry eye
  • Corneal scars
  • Pregnancy or lactation
  • Unstable power

ICL (Implantable Contact Lens)

What is ICL?

ICL is used when laser correction is not the best option. A special lens is placed inside the eye to correct high power, while the natural lens remains inside. This is useful for people with very high power or thin corneas.

Suitable For

  • Power more than -8D up to -18D
  • Thin cornea below 450 microns
  • High cylindrical power
  • Keratoconus
  • Dry eye conditions
  • When LASIK is not suitable

Advantages

  • Good for high power correction
  • No corneal cutting
  • Better vision quality
  • Can be removed if needed
  • Helpful in thin cornea cases

Why Choose Sadhuram Eye Hospital?

  • Detailed eye testing before surgery
  • Corneal thickness and power evaluation
  • Advanced machines for accurate diagnosis
  • Specialist advice for the right procedure
  • Safe planning based on long term eye health
  • Personalised treatment, not one solution for everyone
Removing glasses is not the only goal. Safe vision correction is more important. The right procedure depends on your eye condition, not just your spectacle power. A proper eye check helps decide whether LASIK, Femto LASIK, SMILE, or ICL is the better option.
